A project in the heart of Dubai featuring Melos granules has been voted the world’s second most important sports venue by major international sport industry magazine SportsPro.
“The crucial thing to remember is that this is not a list of the best stadiums in the world; it is a ranking of the most important. We took many factors into account, including size, history, modernity and infrastructure, but we also examined the technology of each venue, as well as the versatility, originality and commercial performance,” says SportsPro editor David Cushnan.
With a monthly print run of 20,000 subscribed copies distributed among the most significant sporting circles around the globe – including Formula 1, the Olympic Committee and some of the world’s biggest sports clubs – SportsPro is one of the most influential magazines in sport. It is particularly well known for its top-notch analyses, statistics and articles, while at all times keeping a firm eye on the business behind the sport.
Dubai’s new sporting jewel can compete at the highest level
The multi-billion-dollar Median Racecourse Dubai project, which saw Melos supply granules that had been specially selected in terms of colour and characteristics for a tunnel leading to the racecourse, won out against many famous sports venues in the first ranking of this kind, achieving second place behind the World Games Stadium in Taiwan.
Designed primarily as a venue for horse-racing meetings, the arena beat South Africa’s Soccer City, which hosted the final of the first World Cup held on African soil in 2010, into third place.
Manhattan’s Madison Square Garden only managed to achieve 14th spot amid stiff competition. The top-placed German stadium is the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, which was placed 9th, well ahead of even the legendary Camp Nou in Barcelona (number 13 on the list).
The SportsPro editors were responsible for compiling the list. Their deliberations were based, among other things, on the outcome of intensive consultations with sports industry experts, architects, designers and stadium managers. 13 different countries made it onto the 30-strong list, the USA, as expected, leading the way with nine sports venues.
Melos colours for a brighter world of sport
According to “Gulfnews”, a sister project is now planned near Beijing in China, which once again is set to cost several billion dollars and provide the world with another important sports venue. The project will again be backed by the Meydan Group.
If the pictures of the Median Racecourse Dubai are anything to go by, the sporting world can soon look forward to an even brighter venue, perhaps once again thanks to colourful granules supplied by Melos GmbH.
