Hybrid Infill - The best of nature and technology

The quality of artificial turf pitches for sport depends largely on the type of infill granules used. In particular, the basic material and processing method are crucial factors in determining how artificial turf systems perform in terms of playing conditions, environmental compatibility, impact on health and costs alike. In developing its new Hybrid Infill, Melos has succeeded in combining natural and synthetic materials for the very first time. Playing performance is not the only aspect to benefit.

The days when artificial turf pitches have to be filled with infill granules made from recycled scrap tyres are long gone. Responsible decision-makers are on the look-out for better alternatives for our environment and health alike. In particular, new synthetic infill types developed especially for use in artificial turf pitches are considered a less problematic option – these include Melos’ long-established Infill EPDM ST. Exclusively organic alternatives (containing e.g. cork) have also been available on the market for some years now.
Hybrid Infill is a new solution that is both synthetic and organic in origin.

Why is this such an achievement?
Melos’ high-quality EPDM infills have been established on the market for some years and have an excellent reputation. They are weatherproof, pose no health risks and are environmentally compatible. They also satisfy the highest standards when it comes to playing conditions, visual appeal and surface feel. Only in terms of heat build-up has their potential yet to be exploited to the full.
This is where the purely organic infill really comes into its own – and it enjoys the reputation of being of ecological origin for good measure. This imposes certain constraints in other respects, however. Factors such as durability, drag-out and elastic playing properties have been shown to be more critical for infill granules of purely organic origin.
Hybrid Infill represents a first in this sector: it combines tried-and-tested EPDM technology with the positive effects of the organic material in such a way as to showcase the benefits of both.

How does Hybrid Infill achieve this?
The temperature of natural turf is influenced by its ability to absorb and store moisture, as well as to release it again at higher temperatures. In the case of artificial turf pitches, the infill component consequently has to possess this property. Hybrid Infill uses its organic materials to precisely this end. The synthetic component of the product ensures that valued EPDM infill properties such as durability and elasticity are still brought to bear.

How far has Hybrid Infill been developed to date?
The development of Hybrid Infill is almost complete. Hybrid Infill is one of the best-performing infill products as regards common test standards, environmental compatibility and impact on health. The use of renewable raw materials and its excellent durability also make it an environmentally friendly alternative. Moreover, its organic components give Hybrid Infill a lower bulk density, rendering it particularly cost-effective in comparison with other infill products.
